Transport tycoon’s Main Beach penthouse sold for jaw-dropping price

A spectcular two-storey Main Beach penthouse owned by the late Melbourne transport tycoon Douglas Kefford AO has sold for $5.1 million.

Mr Kefford owned and operated the Victorian bus company Kefford Corporation until its sale in 2009 and was reportedly worth more than $150 million before his death in 2020.

The three-bedroom, four-bathroom penthouse was sold by Lucy Cole, of Lucy Cole Prestige Properties, and occupies levels 33 and 34 at The Inlet at Main Beach,

It features panoramic ocean and Hinterland views and striking luxury interiors spread over 720sq m, with timber gloss floors and staircase and a unique wraparound lounge.

There’s a private pool and spa as well as three elevators servicing both levels, along with nine balconies and terraces to soak in the views, which stretch almost 360 degrees around.

Ms Cole said the buyers were a Queensland family downsizing from a larger family home for a sea change. “They are delighted with their new sky home with the lady of the house shedding a few tears of happiness at the pre-settlement inspection,’’ Ms Cole said. “It was exactly what the family had long looked for.” Ms Cole said the sky home featured an amazing kitchen and a range of different living areas including a formal dining space for ten or more people and a customised bar. “There are three very spacious bedrooms which all have walk-in wardrobes and ensuites, but the master bedroom suite is particularly impressive,’’ said Ms Cole. “Its exceptionally elegant and spacious. It includes a substantial walk-in dressing room, which features glass sliding doors opening onto a private balcony.”

A long-time director of the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame, Mr Kefford also owned one of the Gold Coast’s most iconic mansions, Bartinon, which sold for $7.22m in 2014. The Inlet residential tower includes resort facilities with a large indoor pool, outdoor pool, indoor and outdoor spas, gym, barbecue, a full-sized tennis court and a library.
